Metacognition

What is metacognition?

Metacognition is a term that means “thinking about your own thinking.” It’s your awareness and understanding of how you learn, think, and solve problems.

Metacognition in Writing

Practicing metacognition in writing allows you to:

  • Plan your paper and think about what you want to say before you write.
  • Notice gaps in your content
  • Stay focused and arrange your ideas in a logical manner
  • Avoid inclusion of unnecessary information
  • Consider different viewpoints and think critically about your assumptions or biases.

When writing a metacognitive paper, you reflect on how you approached a task, why you made certain choices, and what you learned about yourself as a thinker or learner. It's not just about what you did, but how you thought about what you did.
